FP — At some point you said: "The design principles of our future social institutions must be consistent with the principles of organization that nature has evolved to sustain the web of life." Why should it be so?

FC — The answer is the notion of sustainability. Over the evolution of life, nature has developed certain patterns of organization that allowed life to survive for billions and billions of years, using the very same molecules of air, water, and soil. And not only to survive, but to unfold and increase its diversity, and so on. These patterns of organization are patterns we need to understand and to apply to our human design. This is what is called ecodesign today.

Now you could also say: "we are going to improve on nature," and we are not using the natural patterns of design, we are using something better. But the chances, I think, are very slim that we will find something better. Of course, our recent history of the last few hundred years has shown that we are dramatically wrong in using the patterns that we are using now. For instance our economics are based on fossil fuel which is not sustainable. And in the long run we are killing ourselves.

FP – A certo ponto você disse: “Os princípios de design de nossas futuras instituições sociais devem ser consistentes com os princípios de organização que a natureza desenvolveu para sustentar a teia da vida.” Por que deve ser assim?

FC – A resposta é a noção de sustentabilidade. Durante a evolução da vida, a natureza desenvolveu certos padrões de organização que permitiram à vida sobreviver por bilhões e bilhões de anos, usando as mesmas moléculas de ar, água e terra. E não apenas sobreviver, mas desvelar e aumentar sua diversidade, e assim por diante. Estes padrões de organização são padrões que precisamos entender e aplicar ao nosso design humano. É o que chamamos de ecodesign atualmente.

Atualmente você poderia dizer: “nós vamos melhorar a natureza,” e nós não estamos usando os padrões naturais de design, nós estamos usando algo melhor. Mas as chances, eu acho, são muito pequenas de que achemos algo melhor. É claro, a história recente das nossas últimas poucas centenas de anos tem mostrado que nós estamos dramaticamente errados ao usar os padrões que estamos usando agora. Nossa economia está baseada em combustíveis fósseis que não são sustentáveis. E a longo prazo estamos nos matando.
